Building on a project that began as the search for access to public footpaths across the South Downs National Park, Amanda has been working with her husband Simon Davey on a book to celebrate the churches, chapels, ruins and places of worship across the area - looking at how these iconic buildings reflect and involve the history and sense of place in their landscape. There are 270+ sites that they have visited and photographed and this talk will address some of the themes that have appeared as a result of the number of visits that they have made. It has turned into a major love affair for some very special and occasionally overlooked buildings. Some snippets of gossip have been made possible through access to the online tithe maps now available and hints of the gossip will also be given.
Amanda Davey BSc, BA, DipLA. Amanda is a geographer and landscape architect who has worked on historic landscape projects for all of her career, building on a previous life as a map curator with a particular interest in historic mapping. Her work has involved work on multiple historic parks and landscapes for clients working for the National Trust, English Heritage, many local authorities and private clients running their own estates.
