We welcome back Mark Hatton, an expert in the field of Memento Mori. These symbolic tropes act as a reminder of the inevitability of death and within this lecture are discussed in conjunction with the use of Adam and Eve imagery on eighteenth-century stones. As we venture further into this subject area, we ask why these scenes were chosen and what is behind their meaning. Mark also examines how different stonemasons chose to depict these scenes whilst avoiding the various controversies that were hotly debated throughout this period.
More about our speaker: Mark can often be found driving around Scotland in his campervan and exploring old burial grounds, with the intention to find overlooked histories.
