The name Crusoe is eternally linked with Daniel Defoe's castaway Robinson Crusoe. The Crusos were, however, a real-life family who took refuge in England during the Dutch Revolt. Dr. Christopher Joby has published a book on the life and work of one of the more illustrious members of this family, John Cruso. He will provide details of a special discount code for the book, 'John Cruso of Norwich', during the presentation. Cruso was a successful merchant, church elder and author. Dr. Joby presents Cruso's Dutch and English religious verse, which celebrates God's creation and the lives of several important church ministers. One of these, Johannes Elison, was immortalized in paint by Rembrandt van Rijn.
Dr Chris Joby is a Research Associate at SOAS, University of London. He has a PhD in church history from the University of Durham. He has received several scholarships and prizes for his research. He is currently writing a book on the reception of the Christian Gospel in seventeenth-century Taiwan.
